Let’s talk about fructose.
And before you panic and throw your apples in the trash, relax.
I’m not telling you to stop eating fruit.
I’m telling you to start paying attention to how much added sugar you’re actually consuming.
Because fructose is everywhere.
And your liver has to deal with it.
Fructose is found naturally in fruit, but it’s also a major component of the added sugars hiding in processed foods and sweetened drinks.
And there’s a big difference between eating an apple and drinking a giant soda.
The apple comes with fiber, water, nutrients and a whole-food structure that slows you down.
The soda?
You can suck down hundreds of calories in minutes.
And your body doesn’t get the same “I’m full” message.
That’s one reason I’m much more concerned about sugar-sweetened beverages and highly processed foods than I am about your morning berries.
Your liver does a lot of the work of processing fructose.
When you’re consuming a lot of it, especially in the form of added sugars, it can contribute to fat production in the liver, higher triglycerides and metabolic dysfunction.
And that’s not exactly what we’re looking for when we’re trying to protect our metabolism, our heart and our waistline.
But there’s another reason researchers are paying attention.
A 2024 Nature study found that high fructose intake accelerated tumor growth in several animal models.
And the really fascinating part?
The tumor wasn’t necessarily using the fructose directly.
The liver processed the fructose and produced fats that the tumors could then use to grow.
Now—before the internet gets involved:
This does NOT prove that fructose causes cancer in humans.
It’s animal research.
But it’s damn interesting.
And it gives researchers a mechanism worth investigating.
This one really got my attention.
During World War II, sugar was rationed in the UK.
Researchers recently looked at people who were exposed to that lower-sugar environment during their first 1,000 days of life.
And they found something remarkable:
Those exposed to sugar rationing had a lower risk of early-onset cancer later in life.
That’s a big deal.
But again, let’s not turn this into:
“Sugar causes cancer!”
That’s not what the study proves.
It’s an observational natural experiment, and there are plenty of other differences between wartime and post-war childhoods.
But it adds another intriguing piece to the puzzle:
And I think that’s worth paying attention to.
I’m not asking you to become the woman who counts every gram of fructose in a strawberry.
Please don’t.
Eat the fruit.
Eat the berries.
Have the peach.
Enjoy your life.
But start looking for the sugar you don’t realize you’re eating.
Look at:
And remember:
Neither does “organic.”
Neither does “gluten-free.”
And slapping the word protein on the package doesn’t magically make it healthy.
😂
That’s it.
You don’t need to fear carbohydrates.
You don’t need to fear fruit.
You don’t need to give up dessert.
You just need to stop letting added sugar sneak into everything you eat and drink.
Because your liver doesn’t care how pretty the package is.
Your metabolism doesn’t care that the label says “clean.”
Your body knows what you gave it.
And the more we learn about fructose, metabolism and long-term disease, the more I think it’s worth being a little more selective.
Not perfect.
Selective.
Because food should nourish you.
It shouldn’t quietly work against you while the front of the package tells you how healthy it is.
